In memory of Elder Lester Lee Barber
Lester, 72 of Barnegat, NJ returned to his heavenly home on Thursday, October 1, 2020. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in GOD helped him during his struggle of being ill. He is dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact he is at peace with his creator. He encouraged his children to explore the beauty of the gospels.
Lester was born in New Rochelle, NY to the late James Edward Barber & Evelyn Mary Barber (nee Snyder) on March 9, 1948.
While growing up he enjoyed running track, and body building / lifting weights.
Lester attended New Rochelle High School in NY for his Freshman through Senior years. He graduated Mercy College of Westchester County, NY with an Associate degree in Science, he also received a Degree of Bachelor of Bible Study from the Universal Bible Institute of Alamo, Tennessee, and a Degree of Master of Bible from the Universal Bible Institute of Birmingham, Alabama.
Lester was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served in the United States Army where he reached the rank of Sergeant and was Honorably discharged. He was awarded The National Defense Service Metal (NDSM), The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Metal (VCM), Vietnam Service Metal (VSM), 2 Overseas Service Bars, and the Army Sharpshooter Marksmanship Badge (MKM - M-14). He received accommodation for “Can Do Attitude”, under hostile conditions. He received his certification from USATCI Ft. Leonard Wood Mo, where he attended the Army 6th Battalion, 2nd Training Brigade School for Food Service CRS.
Some of the things he did while assisting the local communities, was serving as Chaplain for the Hudson Valley V.F.W. and served as Bible Instructor for Avenel Prison, which he received a citation for outstanding service. He did speak at local nursing homes, and worked with N.A.A.C.P in the local area.
Lester’s purpose in life was to be an ambassador for Christ. Among the many ways he served the Lord, he received his Deacon Certification from the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc., March 1971. While in his role as Assistant Pastor, he was presented with a plaque for Faithful and Loyal Service from the Refuge Temple Annex, March 1980. He also received a Service Award from The Community Network for Superior Service, and from New Jersey Evangelical Diocese Armor Bearer Young Peoples’ Union Conference for participation as a Workshop Speaker, October 1998. He also was a Faculty member and taught Adult Sunday School at Refuge Temple Annex. He was a teacher at 2 Timothy 2:15 Bible Institute. He was also appointed Co-Chairman of Bronx Diocese Evangelistic Team, and a former Dean and teacher of External at Studies for Abundant Life Tabernacle Institute, teaching Apologetics. He also served as Chaplain for the N.A.A.C.P. He was a former member of the Ministerial Alliance Board of Rockland County. Over the years he also conducted Revivals, Conferences, Seminars, Guest spoke at various Educational Institutions. He served as a Pastor, Teacher, and Evangelist.
He had experience in other fields of employment, but during his most recent career he worked in various roles from Management to Traffic Analyst for many Divisions of Agfa (Miles, Agfa Corp, & Bayer) and received many certificates for excellent performance in various roles. He ultimately retired after working as a Line Service Technician at Landmark Aviation in Dulles Virginia and while working there he served on the Safety Board, and received an award for loyalty, dedication and contributions.
Lester is preceded in death by his brothers, Edward James Barber “Bitty”, and Eric Allen Barber.
Lester is survived by his eldest children Lillian Tashell Barber, and Christina Marie Barber from his previous union.
He is also survived by his wife, Sylvia Battaglia-Barber and their daughter, Jessica Amanda Albanese, and son, Devin Lee Barber.
Also, he is survived by his sisters, Joyce A. Thorpe, and Carol E. Barber, granddaughter Aubree R., and grandson, Austin R. He also is survived by his goddaughter, and a host of sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, we would ask donations be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Lester Lee Barber’s name.
