Gloria Malanga Torsiello, 92, a lifelong resident of Newark, passed away in the home she was born in, Wednesday evening, October 23, 2019. The home she loved and raised her family in.
After graduating from St. James High School in the East Ward of Newark, Gloria was employed by Westinghouse when she was first married. She raised her 3 sons and when they began high school, she returned to work as a secretary for the Newark Board of Education. First at Peshine School and then 20 years at Abington Ave School.
Gloria was a devoted parishioner and member of the Rosary Society of St. Francis Xavier in Newark's North Ward.
She was an excellent baker, and was sad she was unable to bake the past few years. However, she passed on her recipes and skills to her grandchildren to keep the Christmas cookies and cakes tradition alive.
She loved watching football and every now and then she would place a "10 timer" on the game to "keep it interesting", as she would say.
Gloria is survived by her son Dennis and his wife Carol, her daughters in law Michele Torsiello and Lorey Torsiello, grandchildren Christopher, Robert, Brian, Lauren, Torey, Joie, and Michael, great grandchildren Isabella, Sophia, Robert, Gracie, Mason, Oliver, Emilia, Michael, and Diana.
She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Joseph "Bob" with whom she shared the great pride of having 3 sons that graduated from college, sons Robert and Thomas, her parents A. Thomas and Sue Malanga. Gloria was very proud of her father, who did not graduate high school, but started his own successful plumbing contracting business and who was appointed to the Newark School Board and served for 12 years in the 1960's into the early 1970's.
She was also predeceased by her sisters Marie Militello and Maude Malanga, and brother Rev. Salvatore Malanga.
Visitation is Friday 4-7pm. Mass will be celebrated 9:30am Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Church in Newark, followed by entombment in Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum, North Arlington.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: St. Jude's Childrens Research Hospital. 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
