Miguel Velasco, a native of Alausi, Ecuador, moved to Newark, New Jersey in the early 1970's. He married Mercedes Maldonado, a native of Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, on November 5, 1973. The two settled in the Ironbound section of Newark where they enjoyed entertaining family and friends, going to restaurants and often travelled to Ecuador.
He was a healthy man most his life until he began to suffer from the symptoms of Parkinson's. The last 10 years he managed those symptoms but slowly declined, eventually leading to the need for long term care.
Miguel will be missed by his extensive family, family by marriage and friends. His most remarkable traits were his humility, great sense of humor and willingness to be of service whether it was helping a friend with a construction project, family with landscaping and gardening, running errands for his wife or making sure guests had a parking spot when they came over for a visit. He was a man of quiet faith and enjoyed listening to Bible teachings. He was proud of his military service in the Ecuadorian armed forces and his passion was soccer and a nice glass of red wine!
