Rosina (Dolly) Makofka nee D’Alessandro passed on July 11, 2019.

Born and raised in Newark’s First Ward. She grew up across the street from St. Lucy’s Church on Seventh Avenue, was married there to Fred in 1951 and was a long time communicant. She loved St. Lucy’s, its feasts for St. Michael and St. Gerard, the First Ward Museum and the presepio. The presepio is an Italian tradition at Christmas time featuring an ornate representation of the Nativity surrounded by miniature village scenes with houses, businesses and statues of animals and people. Her family used to make their own presepio in their home when she was young. Rose’s sister, Anna (Annie), continued the tradition in her home for many years. It was always a spectacular scene. Rose loved visiting the presepio at St. Lucy’s Church, noting all of the details of the scene.

Rose and Fred lived in Jersey City where Rose worked for 18 years at Two Guys. She worked in several departments and had friends throughout the store. Working at Two Guys provided a large extended “family” to Rose and her immediate family. Rose later worked preparing delicious meals and desserts in the cafeteria at a large financial building on Jersey City’s downtown waterfront and at Jersey City State College. She loved cooking, able to prepare her own recipes to the delight of many people.

Rose was a generous, thoughtful woman. She was one of a kind. Rose loved crocheting, making blankets, scarves and dolls for her family, friends and charity. She especially liked making beautiful bride dolls, which entailed crocheting the dress, making a veil, adding details such as earrings and a necklace. Rose was well known as an excellent baker, making cookies and cakes throughout the year, especially for Christmas and other special occasions. She especially loved Christmas, her birthday, and decorated every corner of her home to celebrate Christmas.

Rose is predeceased by her husband, Fred, in 1987; her parents, Nunziata (Nancy) & Michele (Michael) D’Alessandro, sisters Anna (Annie) & Antoinette (Toni) and brother, Peter (Hawk).

Rose is survived by her son Fred and his wife, Linda; son Michael and his wife, Filomena; daughter Catherine and her husband, Bryan Masters; daughter Nancy Makofka and her husband, Paul Molok; five grandchildren, Margaret (Peggi), Fred, Jr. and his wife, Danielle, Michael C. and his wife, Christina, Anthony and his wife, Tina and Melissa Donadio; seven great grandchildren: Adrick, Dylan, Leah, Carter, Twins Emily & Matthew and Christopher, and her beloved 30 year old parrot, Gazoo.

Rose is also survived by her brothers Jerry, Andre, Michael (Junior) and many dear nieces, nephews and friends. Rose treasured her relationship with nieces, Nancy D’Alessandro and Maureen Cheetham, and long time friend, Joanne Hoffman, who was like a daughter to her. Thank you so much to Tara Connor for helping Rose in this last year and a half.

Rose loved, loved, loved the color red and a leopard pattern. If you’d like to wear something of either one in her honor, please do. It will give her a great big smile in heaven.

Visitation is Friday 3-7pm.
